Path Home's Executive Director, Brandi Tuck, recently wrote a letter to The Oregonian about the shortfalls of HUD's Point in Time count.

She emphasizes that the Point-in-Time (PIT) count remains a critical tool for tracking homelessness, but its limitations leave many families with children unseen. Because it only captures those in shelters or unsheltered on a single night, it excludes the thousands of families experiencing hidden homelessness — living in motels, doubled up with others, or staying in cars.

When families aren't counted, they aren't prioritized in funding, leading to long waitlists for shelter, understaffed services, and fewer resources for prevention. Path Home continues to advocate for a more accurate system that reflects the true scope of family homelessness.
